Wooden Bobbins from Textile Mills

Quill

The quill is made of hard woods with 3 metal rings at the larger end, that end is 1 inch in diameter. The quill tapers to 3/8 inch wide at the other end. The quill has a hole in the middle and so is hollow from end to end and measures 8 3/4 inches long. The small end may or may not have a metal band on the tip.

A quill is a wooden bobbin on which thread is wound before the weaving process. Quills were used in the weaving of fabric on the looms. Some quills were stained or painted to signify their purpose in the mill.
