Wooden Bobbins from Textile Mills

Spinning Frame (Beehive)

Frames were 12 inches tall and made of hard wood. Due to their characteristic shape, spinning frames are also called beehive bobbins because of their graduating ridges along the outside. Our candle holder is cut from this type of frame. The graduated end measures 4 1/4 inches tall. The candle holder is 2 1/2 inches wide at the bottom and 1 1/4 inches at the top. A brass fitting at the top of the frame candle holder perfectly fits a standard taper candle.

Frame bobbins were used in the spinning process to make yarn. Their graduated ridges gave the yarn something to lock onto when a new spinning run was started. The frame bobbin tops had to be smooth to prevent the yarn from snagging. Cotton or wool rovings were transferred from a larger spool via the spinning process onto the frame bobbin. Different frame sizes were used for different weights and thickness of fibers.

These classic wooden candle holders look awesome with country and primitive decor. Change the atmosphere by switching candle colors to go with seasonal trimmings.
