Twisters come in a variety of sizes according to the type of yarn being twisted and range from 7 to 4 1/2 inches tall. Each has a metal band on the 1 1/2 inch wide top and a 1/2 inch hole running through the center of the bobbin. The barrel is approximately 3/4 inch wide.

Twister bobbins were used to add strength to the yarn by combining two or more threads onto spools. Their name "twister" refers to adding a twist to a single yarn or thread to obtain greater strength, smoothness, and increased uniformity.
